I wouldn’t say a lot, maybe a few. I’ve given him chances and it’s just his lackluster and uninspired writing. The only spec I did was a graded book I paid $30 for and 10 copies of the first black winter. Those I got for $2 each and $50 isn’t a huge investment. As well Black Winter will someday return. If anything he’s been great for spec and people should appreciate him in that aspect.

If it was announced for HBO it’d be the complete opposite as HBO is well known to put out quality programming. Even the canceled series were great. Whereas The CW is DC 90210.

If you read God Country, the ending of King in the Black shouldn’t surprise you.

Funny thing is, all the disappointment over Knull and Dylan and I’m sitting here feeling a bit bummed about WRAITH. That poor fellow got a raw deal. Hopefully he isn’t still floating around naked or completely atomized into nothingness like the comic implied. He was pretty cool.
The whole storyline about his father studying the God of Light/power source, etc, and how it played out in the King in Black ending didn’t really give me a good “was the juice worth the squeeze” feeling either.

What is spec that didn’t pan out (so far) from cates run? Wraith, sentry and the void, star lord being the lord/god/ whatever of light. Codex, virus I remember people think some of the celestial would play a big deal in king in black since we see one venomized at one point in the background. Mister E. I know star lord and black knight were talked about to possibly play heavy into king in black,I don’t know about the other tie ins but I don’t think they ever even showed up in the main title or venom

I don’t think we’ve seen the end of Wraith either, just like Knull.

Everyone dump ya’lls copies of Venom #3 please. Like Warren Buffett would say, now’s a good time to buy… Knull will end up like Thanos, he comes and then goes… but he’ll never go away completely. We only get the ongoing stories for the heroes, not the villains… that’s just how comics operate!

For me, I don’t really care about the “spec” per se. I can’t think of any of these books that I overpaid for (or didn’t buy at cover price). I enjoy talking “spec” more because it is really fun going down the rabbit holes of “What if” and looking into back issues that could be at play.
I did that extensively (there are posts somewhere) with regards to both “The God of Light” and “Black Knight-Ebony Blade”.
I think there is some inherent, non monetary satisfaction in figuring something out in the incredibly rich history of comic books we have to work with. If you can make a buck out of it…that’s certainly great as well but it really is secondary to how I feel about all of this.

Everyone likes a good ending to a story. It doesn’t have to be an ending I thought up or envisioned…just a satisfying one. Certainly, what constitutes a “good ending” is completely up to the writer/reader/watcher.

I love horror/scary type movies…but tend to favor ones in which the “bad guy” is caught/captured/destroyed. When one doesn’t end that way, I’m a bit bummed out, but as long as it makes sense overall, I can roll with it. As I wrote above, make it so the juice is worth the squeeze.

I guess that’s my issue with Venom…it just didn’t quite make sense to me and left me feeling disappointed. Not because of spec, not because I wasn’t right…just because it didn’t leave me feeling satisfied. I’ll live, I still have all the comics, and I still appreciate all of them.

The second print cover (i think it was 2nd print) of Anne dropping off Dylan on the doorstop is striking and just a very emotional cover that is one of my favorites. Just one of the cool things that came of all this.

I guess that’s the best I can put it.

I can see that. For me, I didn’t invest a whole lot of time thinking about the entire Knull story and buildup, I just read and took in whatever was presented. He (Knull) dying after Venom gets the new power source to defeat him was just no surprise to me. Typical comic book ending for me… good guy (who should still be a villain though) beats bad guy…

You either walk away satisfied, neutral or dissatisfied. Not liking the ending is one thing but when you start bashing a writer for “ruining” the spec on a previous issue (I’m not saying you are one of these types), then one should rethink why they’re into comics. Writers and creators don’t give two shits about spec or if you make/lose money from their books, that’s not their goal. Writers write while artists draw and create art…

Did I love Venom run? Meh, I’ll admit, Dylan annoyed me most of time and if he was killed off, would have made it more delightful. Was I surprised by the ending in King in Black? Not that much. Was it a great ending? Not great but wasn’t complete trash either.

That is quite the assumption. What did you base this opinion on?

I found the ending of Cates’ Absolute Carnage to be ‘butchered’. The ending was contrived and rushed and made the beginning of the story moot. The story was set up such that all the codices were needed to be collected in order to free Knull. About half way through, it was decided that only certain codices were needed. No explanation. No reason. Just a convoluted, disjointed story. Cates has a good imagination. He is just very poor at his execution in the detail. Stories with poor execution in the details, imo, don’t come from great writers.
Imo, a great writer has each step of this story figured out well in advance. Cates comes across as flying by the seat of his pants. As displayed in his disjointed Absolute Carnage story. So, imo, Cates did ‘butcher’ that particular story ending. The whole story on general was a sh!t show.

I read the same thing about the 3rd Star Wars trilogy, people blamed the fans. Then the Mandalorian came out, and fans love it. Don’t diss fans, they do know how to appreciate well done work.

I can only speak for myself, but other than The Rise of Skywalker, the third trilogy was my favorite (though nostalgia is trying to convince me that the original trilogy was my favorite).

I’m not blaming the fans. I’m just trying to find out if the person was just following what others are saying or their own thoughts on the matter. If you’re argument always turns to, well, others don’t like it… don’t effing care, tell me why do you not like it? Don’t tell me others don’t like it, we talking about why you’re here talking that it’s butchered… That’s the point I was trying to make.

Anthony says he liked Shadecraft. I thought it was hot garbage for tweens. I’m not going to say i like it cause he and plenty of others say they liked it.

And for the record, I actually liked the 3rd Star Wars trilogy… I don’t give two shits what others said about it. I enjoyed all 3 of them.

Yep, everyone is different. I don’t like the 2nd film in the third trilogy due to all the loops holes, and lack of chemistry between supposed romantic interests, also what they did to Luke’s character just seems dumb especially how they ended it. Even Mark Hamill repeatedly spoke out about the how the characterization of Luke was off. Much of the movie seemed forced. Good for you if you liked it, but to me it was the weakest link by far.

The Mandalorian I though was so much better.

Having a similar opinion does not mean following the herd.

Go reread again, I did not say you in particular blamed the fans.

Knull won’t be Thanos that’s a stretch In my opinion. But I’d wait to buy a bit down the road, wait till the prices get cheaper as they certainly will. People still wanna get as much as they can out of that book right now despite the character death. Wait a few months at least and you’ll really be able to start copping some copies. Just my two cents.

I totally agree, just like all the Codex books are bargain basement now.

Codex once we found out was Dylan in another Universe was a complete throwaway character anyways.

End up like Thanos (like most popular villains who come and go), I didn’t say would be Thanos. Maybe in 30-40 years we’ll see… but by then, I won’t give a damn either more than likely or already be dead.
