I’ve always said I prefer Spawn stories when someone else is writing them. McFarlane had a great idea but other writers always are better at storytelling with Spawn than he is.
George Lucas Syndrome (GLS).
Yeah, Neil Gaiman turned out to be a creepy fella but I read an article once where the guy went into so many details of how Neil Gaiman alone in the early issues of Spawn he guest wrote for McFarlane pretty much opened up the entire Spawn Universe for endless story telling and characters… something McFarlane could not do himself. I just can’t read McFarlane writings, his narration makes me think it’s a 8 year old boy telling the story… it’s just not that good or engaging…
Gaiman said that it was a trick he learnt from Alan Moore - drop a lot of breadcrumbs early on, and then you’ve got lots of characters you can go back to and pick up later, which then looks like smart story planning in retrospect - so in that first Angela issue of Spawn, I think you’ve got first appearance of Medieval Spawn, first appearance of Cagliostro, etc.
Gaiman is a bit of a monster, but no questioning his greatness as a comic writer.
Alan Moore says that he is/was literally possessed by a demon. Gaiman I wouldn’t be surprised he claimed the same. Hollyweird and all.
It’s always the weirdo’s who are pretty creative… and yes, Gaiman great writer, it’s too bad he turned out the way he did. Sigh!
Hey hey… now you can open it and actually read it perhaps… ![]()
It will now be readable.
lol
Wonder if this might be because he’s been told he has to stop doing anything else if he intends to direct whatever it is they’re doing with it, so he’s laying the groundwork for that…
Nah, production films don’t care who’s writing the current comic or books, etc… they’ll bring in their own script writers for any movie or show along with who they think will be the best director. The problem with Todd is, he’s not good at writing, directing or anything outside of his toy business and drawing (and even that has it’s skeptics on quality)… If the Spawn movie does ever happen, Todd should just stick to being a Producer at most… cause we all know they don’t really do a whole lot for the most part for filming!
He should cameo as a bum again in the new movie. I’ve got the old figure of “Todd the Bum”.
I did not know he still wrote it.
Same. Last I heard was he was just over seeing the writing. Maybe thats him writing it in a way
?
He has proven he’s got a little OCD control freak in him I think…
He’s been off and on as the writer for years. Rory McConville recently did a long stint as writer. McFarlane has wrote every issue of Gunslinger.
Very true. I have still been collecting and reading Spawn, and I think regardless of who they have writing it Todd will always have his fingers in the mix. He probably should hire a high profile writer for issue #400 and on, and go for a full on reboot with #400. This title is at this point where it can use some kind of full reboot, but keep the numbering going.
Do an Ultimate-style alternate Universe for Spawn. Then, when it eventually loses steam, have it and the OG Universe overlap in an epic battle event and end up melding into a new blend for fans. Jeez, I should be getting paid to work at one of these comic companies!
