Star Wars: The High Republic

Where in the rules does it say if you have a Diamond account and buy at wholesale prices that you have to sell for cover price? I get all the other reasons why you wouldn’t have a buyers club but this is the one that makes zero sense lol

Don’t you think cvr A would be a $50 to $70 book, today?

There isn’t a rule but one better be prepared to lose customers. Retailers and speculators have opposite mindsets and overhead. Speculating will cost the retailers in opportunity lost.

Heck no…there are tons of SW fans, myself included that have been all over this from day one. People act like folks only buy comic because spec sites and such push them.
No way this book was hitting those numbers.

Not to mention the only reason Daredevil 25 hit those numbers is because, really, who is buying DD or has it on their pull list? Literally no one lol

You don’t have to sell for cover, but you can’t pre-order for customers at or below the wholesale price (which is better than 50% for almost every store: https://www.diamondcomics.com/SiteData/Downloads/DiamondTools/RetailerInfo/diamondtos.pdf )

Basically, if you buy at wholesale you can’t sell at the same price as you would be a competing wholesaler in Diamond’s eyes from what I have been told.

Running a store is a tough business, which is why a friend and I worked out a nice discount on bulk orders at 20+ and 40+ order levels with my file LCS. We get a great price on bulk orders, and our business helps them qualify for higher level discounts on all their product from the given publisher. And, I don’t have to worry about shipping damage to books since I get them day of release from the store in the cases. I would encourage anyone to find a LCS that will work with them and give them their bulk spec business. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised at how large of a discount you can negotiate.

Give it time, and they will be at those numbers. Last year I had this book and Strange Academy (Harry Potter for Disney) as the two no brainer spec plays to go big on when they were solicited early in the year/pre-Covid. I was actually pissed that Marvel pushed the FOC and release date - at that time it was peak Covid fear and I bet it would have been an even lower order number.

I expect prices to follow the Strange Academy #1 pattern on HR #1.

I picked up about 8 of cover A, the 1:25, and the Anindito variant…all sold within a few hours on ebay. Paid for my order from TFAW of 35 copies split between all covers! woot! now to stash them away for a rainy day…

BTW thanks for this thread, it has been very helpful!

Imagine how high it would be if Disney didn’t promote it pre-foc

No, and nobody can claim such a thing. That’s just blowing hot air what if’s…

You do realize the frenzy prices are also flippers trying to get their hands on them to turn around and sell themselves.

I walked into my shop today and there was a huge stack of them available.

Yeah. Imagine. Who f’n cares about baseless ifs and buts?

@skiw99 Value rising over time is an entirely different argument. I agree with you. I went all in on both this and SA as well.
My point was that HR was never going to hit $70-80 on release, regardless of discussion pre or post FOC.

Very few hyped comics do reach $70-$80 on release for a raw copy, lets play a game… What are some comics that were $70-$80 for a non-ratio or variant, raw cover’s upon release? This is more of a game for the old timers so I can learn from them. The only recent comic I can think of that came out that was around that price was the first Wolverine’s Daughter Rein, that was like $90 on eBay the week of release.

Is it just me or is the 2nd print preorder starting to be a ghost?

There is no rule but the publishers put a cover price on these for a reason. That’s the starting point price. Over time when demand exceeds supply, the value goes up.

Let the retailers continue to price high on release day. We the readers, collectors and even flippers can stop buying from them. To me, it’s just bad mojo and a bad business move. If retailers want to price it how they see fit, then the publishers should just do away with the price on the cover and even they should start raising the prices if they see the numbers climb during pre-orders on how many should be printed… I’m sure the retailers would love that idea… Publishers got bills too, they got hungry mouths to feed as well…

Just to follow up on my post above. A good store will make it worth your while on bulk discounts so you can make nice $$$ throughout the year.

how much did you pay per sway? Because if your bragging and paid $60 / Sway its not that impressive so at least tell us how much you paid.

@ Everyone,

Please do not talk or bring up politics. It’s against our rules and guidelines and the current news has nothing to do with Star Wars High Republic.

Regards.

If I was paying cover for that many 1:25s, and then the amount you needed to qualify for them, then I would not be doing it. That is my point - find a LCS in your area that will work with you on a good bulk volume discount and pre-order your spec plays with them. It supports your brick and mortar store, and they will likely match whatever price you can buy them at online.

And, to answer your question, I will not disclose my discount level on a public forum (another CHU member gets the same rate). However, there are plenty of LCSs that will give you worthwhile volume order discounts. I know of four, and I am sure there are more.

There’s no way a store would cut you a deal on 40 1:25 High Republic #1 variants. They would have to order 1000 copies of the regular covers…
