It’s a catch 22 and it’s bullshit. You don’t use enough minorities and you’re not being inclusive or “woke” enough. Use too many and you’re only doing it as an empty gesture or just filling quotas. Both sides of that argument need to chill out.
Exactly,
They filmed Mulan near Uiygher (spelling?) concentration camps.
They changed the character of the Ancient One from a Tibetan monk to a white British lady. Why? Because China says there is no such thing as Tibet.
Not Disney, but in the new Top Gun movie China demanded that the Taiwanese flag be removed from Maverick’s jacket.
I’m all for inclusivity. We are a melting pot of ideas, religions, and cultures. It’s what makes us super powerful. However to sit there and claim to be all for inclusion while simultaneously helping a regime poop all over human rights is as ass backwards as it gets.
Lastly I should mention that as of late I have been doing some real reflection and realizing that I’ve been very ignorant about of a lot of things. Part of it is how I was taught in school (some things are flat out omitted) and other parts are from upbringing and having knee jerk reactions to things without really thinking about them. So perhaps I just need to slow down… but getting triggered is a real problem I have.
Yeah, it’s a double edged sword that is definitely cutting both ways. As long as I don’t get extreme political views forced on me in the form of story telling I am fine. I just want to be entertained…not preached to.
My ramblings:
I thought F+WS was actually really good. Sure, it didn’t deliver Iron Man’s final line, and it didn’t make me as teary eyed as when a racoon lost his tree. But, it brought a ton of good things.
First of all, the social commentary around race was really well done. The surrounding cast for this was SO much stronger than Wandavision (Darcy, I’m looking at you). Elijah was great, and it set up the possibility of his story in a movie down the road.
Madame Hydra is an intriguing character that we’ll definitely see a lot more of.
I wasn’t a fan of Russell in the earlier episodes, but he got so much better as he became more and more conflicted. Really like him as US Agent now.
I like the idea of Carter flipping to the dark side and tarnishing that name. I mean, Cap ditched her for her aunt!?
Zemo turned out to be a really great anti-hero, and he got the last laugh.
Madripoor was done well and has so much more to get into.
Bucky was one of my least favorite characters prior to this, but really like the depth of the character now.
Falcon’s arc was great. His action scenes were really well done for TV.
And, the pacing was great. Another thing this show did far better than Wandavision.
All in all, I really liked this. After Wanda, I was feeling a little less fired up about the MCU’s new path on TV, but I’m FAR more encouraged now. Looking forward to Loki and Hawkeye. Those Kate Bishop books are gonna get nuts, as Haylee (sp?) is great.
I agree with this. One line that has stuck with me was when Bucky said (and I know I am not word for word here) " I didn’t know what it must feel like for you to be a black man and asked to be Captain America. How could I ?"
One thing I’m trying to do is slow my roll a lot and think about things from other people’s point of view.
If you realize things you believed may have been wrong, you are already ahead of 99% of people. I read an article once about how once we really believe something it is almost impossible to change our minds. Any evidence to the contrary just reinforces our beliefs. Just being willing to take in new evidence and maybe change your views shows you are a smart person capable of growing and evolving. And yeah, lots of what we learn in school we then learn later was a total sham. Columbus discovered America? More like he showed up and killed the people already living there…
Same here. Living in the Minneapolis metro area has my eyes open to a whole bunch of stuff that maybe I wasn’t able to see 5 or 10 years ago. Growth is a good thing.
When Sam showed Isaiah the statue and memorial for him and Isaiah who up to that point was still pretty bitter and didn’t want to let his guard down, him getting emotional and embracing Sam was such a beautiful moment
Loving what everybody is saying here. I used to think the world was very cut and dry and problems were easy to solve, but that was from my viewpoint. I started learning to take a step back and look at other people’s viewpoints and where they were coming from, understanding why they felt a certain way and not dismissing another person’s pain. There were no true villains in Falcon and Winter Soldier. They all thought what they were fighting for was the right thing. We all may not agree, but if we start to understand we can get to some solutions and make things better.
Sh*t, we’re all getting pretty deep here. Back to comic book talk…?
I’d take issue with this! Sharon turned out to be kinda evil!
Conflicted villains are still villains…
