We all hate store variants but

I read it this way to. But the signature has to be witnessed by a rep authorized by CGC to get the signature series green label. Unwitnessed sigs still get only the basic green label.

They point out that the yellow/green label will take the acetate cover grade into consideration.

Then below it says unsigned and witnessed books will get a “qualified grade.” They very carefully chose this language. Unsigned books are going to grade lower.

Real hard to lose 3 short boxes :joy:

Oh, interesting
maybe because they can’t be sure that the acetate cover was actually done by the original artist unless it’s verified to be his signature.

That’s one theory. The more cynical theory is they are pitching the Signature Series and a future in-house Crain signing to extract more fees from this debacle.

Bravo, CGC. Masterful corporate PR pivot and product cross-marketing.

Probably, but if CGC keeps up its current stupidity their invulnerability won’t last. Once upon a time Sears was at the top of the retail mountain. They got full of themselves and after decades of poor business practices they are now practically gone. Not saying that will happen to CGC but if they are smart, they will learn from their mistakes and greed.

They should not authorize any signature unless it’s witnessed by someone authorized by CGC. Even if it was sent to them directly by the artist themselves.

I forget who it was
a wife of an artist, was it Kirby?..was signing for him when he was I’ll and and sending in the autographs to dynamic forces as “authentic.”

Not physically witnessing the signature is compromising the whole point of calling them certified.

It’s such a short sited response from them. They are going to make and extra few hundred dollars while making the upset crowd even more upset.

They should have just said “we messed up. But since we can’t recall all the books that were sent back already we are going to continue to grade these books the way we have been. Moving forward we will make sure this doesnt happen. blah blah blah”

People would still be upset and CGC would still get made fun of but at least they could begin to move on.

I don’t believe the unsigned book will grade lower, it will get the same grade an unsigned book gets and will still have a GLOD (Green Label of Doom aka Qualified Grade). It will just have a verified signature on a GLOD
so a
Yellow GLOD. There are examples of these, such as a witnessed signature on a book that contains an unwitnessed signature on the cover, or books with massive production defects having a witnessed signature.

These books should have been graded as Qualified from the beginning.

Can’t grade one book one way and grade essentially an identical situation differently.

They doing the right thing by reversing their position, as embarrassing as it is to admit it. They should “cancel” all future orders to grade the are books, notify and refund everyone’s money in full including those already graded
and move on.

It’s as close to turning back the clock as they can get.

I have a friend who likes Cates stuff and really dug what Cates and Stegman did on, “Venom,” so I’m going to get a copy of, “Vanish,” for him. I’ll read it before I give it to him maybe.
