We all hate store variants but

Looks like Comic Book Exclusives is at it again. Homage to the 1000 copy Dark Horse 100 variant of Clone Wars 1:

Supposedly limited to 800 sets. Sounds like they’re upping the number. Maybe they need to make more dough?

Here’s my experience with their first exclusive.

My virgin copy showed up damaged. There was a stiff, rigid crease running up from the bottom of the cover.

So I emailed CBE and asked to do an exchange. They replied;
“Unfortunately, the majority of the copies we received have similar damage. We will do our best to provide you with a replacement set with minimal damage, or we can provide you with a full refund for the set. If you would like to exchange,
please return the set including both COAs.”

… so at that point I was actually feeling a little sorry for them that all there comics had arrived with this damage. I imagined they were getting flooded with refund requests. Anyway, the way he worded it, I didn’t expect to get a decent copy if I exchanged it… so I just told him I wanted a refund. I didn’t learn until later that these were selling for such high $$$ on Ebay.

Actually, I found out about the Ebay prices by reading a thread here on this forum. Then I realized the real reason he was trying to encourage a refund instead of exchange was likely because there was money to be made for them by not exchanging.

I had read the discussion on here after I had sent the comics back but before they had refunded me. So after hearing about the Ebay resale values, I decided to email them and ask them to just exchange the comics instead of refunding them. Crickets. They never did respond to that email.

After not hearing back on the previous email, I sent another email asking when I would be reimbursed for my costs of shipping the damaged comics back to them. Crickets again. Never responded to that either.

Another interesting story from this was when I told him I was sending the comics back, he told me to make sure the COAs were included. I was surprised as I didn’t even know there were COAs… there were none in the back of the comic boards. Anyway, luckily I still had my discard pile by my desk and went through it to find them. They were little pieces of paper that I must have just thought were business card / promotional little papers you get from a lot of sellers. I’m not sure if they shipped everybody’s like this or just mine.

Did your reader copy have the entire front and back cover removed?

Good god, that’s a terrible “homage” (if thats what they want to call it)

Yuck, look, I bought their first exclusive only so far, as I thought it was great with the homage to clone wars #1. These last 2 have been terrible imo, and I won’t be picking them up. I did sell my virgin copy for $300, so did make out like a bandit while recouping my buy in money’s and keeping my trade dress for free for myself. And both of my copies I got in did come flawlessly, 9.8 contenders btw.

Yes, entire cover was missing.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way, @ComicSpec.

These stores have no scruples when trying to take your hard earned money.

I’d call it a light allusion.

So, I’ll come clean finally here and let everyone know that I bought the first cover. I liked the homage, I knew there would be tons of first appearances based on reading Light of the Jedi and I thought it would be the best of the variants when it came to rarity (real or perceived). I don’t regret that decision while remaining entirely realistic about the possibility for shenanigans with the supposed 600 copy limit. If it turns out there are 3,000 trade and 1,500 virgin, I’m still good with my purchase personally.

The simple, cold, hard take I have on the second two variants is that (1) the homages aren’t exciting enough to entice me to buy; (2) there is no spec-worthy content likely in either issue; and (3) they’re over priced.

So, I didn’t buy #2 and won’t buy #3 (number of variants not issue numbers). I love the high republic series, but that doesn’t translate to me mindlessly buying every store variant that is seemingly getting pumped out now that retailers have finally caught on to fans’ excitement over it.

Finally, High Republic Adventures is better than you think. Read it. (Talking to nobody in particular here).

So couldn’t they attach all the full covers they removed to cover A copies and sell their variant on eBay for the next 5 years at eBay prices

That’s not a very good homage. And I’m still waiting for them to post proof of destroying 2000+ copies of their first exclusive.

For the new one do they make any claim on how they’re dealing with the other copies not sold?

I agree with all of your points, especially how the first issue had many first appearances and it being the best variant for #1. And HRA does have the better story so far imo as well.

Okay homage, but I bought a copy mainly because they are reportedly donating some of the proceeds. It is cheaper to buy directly on Wonderworld than on ebay.

Wanted Comix with another

Too bad Unknown Comics Issue 2 exclusive has the first Estala Maru (Jedi) cover appearance because now this cover has little going for it.

All these high republic exclusives are very meh

I always think Unknown variants are pointless. Except for maybe a Solem cover, most leave me asking why the variant needed to be made.

I am not crazy about a store variant being called a “key of the week”. Seems like advertising to me. When HaHa #2 came out I loved the Wanted Comics exclusive (which I know own) but didn’t have it listed as a pick of the week because it as a store exclusive. I knew that set was gonna be fire but still did not have it on my picks because it was a store exclusive.
