We all hate store variants but

That movie was so silly.

Hence here is one problem in today’s world… you should care, that’s the underlying problem.

I’m gonna browse github, steal someone’s program that’s opensource that anyone can view, update, fork, manipulate, change the logo to my own, change the name of the program and compile it into a binary, start a company based on it, sell it and tell everyone, look what I made, buy my product! Who cares how I got it right?

Basically, that’s the same thing this guy is doing. He’s taking other people’s work and copyrighted work to pass it off as his own, then making money off of it. Shame on him and he loses all respect from me. In the not so distant past, we’d call these types of people… Thieves!

I’m totally fine with people creating digital art. There’s a LOT of great digital artists out there, and it is a skill. But I don’t care if you’re using a pencil or a computer, I’m not going to support someone using other peoples’ work or art without their permission. There are some cases where the new art is truly transformative (like some street art, for example) but for a comic cover, that’s not what their goal is.

I agree. If you can create art based on someone else’s where you change or put enough work into it to almost be your own, then great, you still have skills (Mattina has gotten flack for copying poses and such but he also does enough art to call the majority of it his own).

What we’re seeing with this Gun Honey cover is just a complete rip off. I could have made that cover with minimal effort! Would I ever do that? ā– ā– ā– ā–  no, I actually want to feel proud of work I do and call it my own if and when I do. This Gun Honey cover is complete and utter laziness with zero creative ability… If I owned any of those images he used, I’d be going after him for owed dues just to donate to art schools so kids learn how to create their own artwork from scratch!

Investing in unethical artists has additional risks. If they have no ethics in their work life their personal life is probably same. An arrest for the right crime can make an artists work worthless killing the investment.

I made my own. Took me about 10 minutes. Here we go:

I used these images that I have no right to copy or alter:

I thought we were more of a Do You Pooh group…

I made peace with digital art a long time ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if most who do amazing digital work couldn’t paint their way out of a paint bucket. Some can of course, but others, not so much. It is what it is. A draw the line at tracing though and flat out taking images off of the internet and re-coloring them. Now, that is just my personal taste. If I could have bought one of those copies of Gun Honey before they sold out I would have in a second. I know an easy, quick flip when I see one. I won’t be adding any of his "artwork: to my pc but if I can make a buck off it…yep, I’ll do that. That goes for anyone else too.

So if you were an artist and someone took your work, tweaked it, claimed it as their own and profited off of it how would you feel then? The guys not an artist. Artists don’t steal others work and pass it off as their own. He should be called out on social media for his bullshit.

His followers/fans are either unknowing that he is stealing then photoshopping OR they know he is stealing and then photoshopping.
If it’s the former - It’s very unfortunate for them and he should be called out on social media so that they’re aware and act accordingly (i.e. drop his sorry @ss).
If it’s the latter - I give up on humanity (maybe I already did awhile ago… lol)

Does he have an account in twitter or something that people can post to?

Love Dell Otto and he’s a stellar artist no doubt but a lot of those spider-man store variants from him just feel too samey

In reference to your question I tracked down the artist of the Magneto statue Mattina ripped off for his Venomized Magneto cover and he was flattered someone took his work and used it. He felt it confirmed he had the talent to be in the biz. Wasn’t that upset at all.
