This one is a bit local but really sucks. It’s been a couple years since I was in the shop but he was the best. Great store to find htf indie book and really welcoming to younger readers. I took my kids to a couple FCBDs and let them explore the all ages section. Big loss for the community here.
My sister in-law and her family live over in Clintonville now, so we’d stop by when we had free time. The last time I was there, I was talking with him about why the front of the store was boarded up. Turned out some young girl who just got her license or permit drove her car right through the front of the store on accident. Nobody was hurt and we shared some good laughs over it.
Last time I was there was around 2012. In a sea of revolving new faces, he was the constant. He still loved working there. I remember when he left LO to sell cars. Place wasnt the same until he decided to come back. I never did like the new owners. I remember when the store layout was dramatically different, early 2000’s. It was just him at the counter, by the front door, greeting customers, making conversation. Good times.
Hope he wasn’t having to do conventions to pay for treatment and healthcare costs… I really hope in my retirement years I’m not having to work just to try and stay alive and healthy!
Very good chance his health care cost was putting him in a bad spot… I seen an ad for CBLDF, Hero Initiative couple years back about providing support for him…
