Issue #2 of Star Wars is starting to climb out of reach. Nice books!
In case no one is doing anything tomorrow night (6pm CST)
Question: Does the CGC or PGX company president do anything like this?
I guess I can watch that tomorrow while I pack up my next CGC shipment…
(comment meant to provoke)
Eh, makes it sound more like you’re thinking of changing from CGC to CBCS than it does like you’re provoking us. Like, “Maybe I’ll actually ship it to CBCS instead if this is a good interview!”
If you wanted to provoke you should’ve said, “I’ll watch it while listing my CGC slabs I just got back for more money than the CBCS slabs get.” ZING!
Seriously though, with CGC raising prices I’m thinking about CBCS myself now…
Provoke what? I’m considering sending my next shipment of books to flip to CGC to not only get the 9.8s they hand out like candy but the best sale price to those that believe it’s really a 9.8!
I honestly don’t know if CGC or PGX President actually engages their customers like Borock does. He’s on the forums as well and jumps in here an there. He also has a thread where he posts interesting books that he comes across when grading.
I’ve honestly only ever heard good things about Borock himself. With the CGC price increase I swear CBCS is looking appealing. I just need to learn all the rules about submitting stuff as CGC was imposing to learn and now I’ll need to learn all the rules for CBCS.
Pgx has a good customer service manager Collette, I don’t know the owner.
It should be an interesting year. Everywhere I look people are complaining about CGC cost increase and looking at CBCS so will be interesting to see if CGC submissions slow down and if CBCS submissions pick up, can they handle the load and how it will impact overall quality.
It’s easy to keep standards up when you are doing 2% of the market share
I will be sending all my books to CBCS to get graded. For me it’s easy because I’m mostly sending in moderns that I’ve accumulated over the last few years. If I was sending Hulk 181s etc, then it’s a no brainer that I send it to CGC.
I have yet to send in any books to get graded as all this is new to me but I’ve been doing research on the 2 companies in the last few months. From everything I’ve gathered CBCS is the far superior company with regards to grading standards, TAT, pricing, professionalism, etc. The only exception is that CGC graded books still command a higher premium in the market.
Another benefit to me is that CBCS has opened a submission office in Canada so it is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper for me to ship it there and have it shipped back to me.
I don’t begrudge CGC for their business decisions but CBCS just makes more sense for me personally.
Steve has done a few of these videos before and the last time I caught him on (Comics with Bueller I think) I was somewhat disappointed with some of his answers.
One of the questions came up was about the labels. Steve said that he believed that the comic should be the main selling point and that the labels should not be the focal point. So he has designed his labels to be as unobtrusive as possible, hence the minimalistic design.
I believe that part of the reason that that CGC has such a big market share is that they’ve been around longer and that they have set the standard. The market has decided that the CGC labels are much more attractive than the CBCS labels. Although I do like the simple design of the CBCS labels, it looks like it was done in Microsoft Paint. I think this holds back a lot of people who are hesitant to go with CBCS. They have so many CGC books and then having books with a CBCS label sticks out like a sore thumb. Comic book collectors have serious OCD and like everything to look uniform and consistent. I think even if CBCS made their labels to look a little more similar to the CGC labels it would increase their market share.
I will actually be trying CBCS myself, I have a signed book I want to get signature verified.
You’re right that would have been more provoking lol.
You may want to research further. My research about the Oakville CBCS facility didn’t end up well. The Oakville facility is open, apparently, but they aren’t answering Emails or phone calls about MIA shipments.
And the books that you send to Oakville simply get turned around and sent to Dallas for grading, so, your books will actually have 4 trips through the postal system. Once to Oakville (from you), then to Dallas, back to Oakville then, lastly ,out to you.
Yeah I know about that. I’ll only send books to the Oakville office if it’s books that can wait. Right now the border lockdown really messed things up. If I need to get my books faster I can send to Dallas directly but it’s significantly more expensive. I’ve been checking the CBCS forums and there’s Canadians there giving their experiences sending to the Oakville offices. Right now the office is operational, just a little slow now. I’m not going to condemn them during this difficult time however they could be a little better with their communications.
Ironically I have one of these at CBCS now, that was a 9.6 CGC before getting damaged in shipment…hoping in pressed back to a 9.6.
But saw this pop up on eBay (very rare to see issue 5 newsstand in 9.6 and up) so grabbed it just in case mine grades lower. But I have to say once I got this I’m a little disappointed…has some stress lines around the top staple and a very small edge crease along the back top edge.
So should not have graded above 9.4. Some would argue 9.2. Was graded in 2019 So is the older case as well. Still a very cool book.
Bought my first cbcs slab off the bay. Spawn #8 for under $50 shipped. I’m away from home till next month so I won’t be able to check it out till then.
Think I’m gonna place a few pre orders on cbcs slabs too.
I guess the only thing thats bugging me is if I put them on display alongside CGC slabs and whether or not that will look off.
I’d be happy to move over to cbcs exclusively though, if the look, price, and turnaround time is right.
It’s high time I submit my first batch of books for grading too.
I’m curious how yall ship books to cbcs so they don’t get messed up from handling or shipping. Do yall just use a bag and board or a bag and 2 boards or toploaders?
Random question but has anyone sent books in on 2 day modern and how long did it take? Curious to send in some books and pay for that and see how it goes
I usually will place them in a current bag, then put that into a silver age bag and board.
Then I’ll stack comics face to face (spines opposite edges) and then sandwich those with two robust pieces of cardboard (secured with blue tape along top and bottom edges). I’ll continue to “stack” them like this, and then bubble wrap the stack and place it in a box.
Hope that helps.
