Disposable vinyl gloves are cheap… one pair should last the entire day.
That means you’re stuck with PGX…or going overseas…neither of which are as good as CGC or Becket (CBCS).
I’m fine with PGX they have one reported problem from when they first opened which not even that big of a deal over time as it involves a employee grading their own books who was terminated. He had a 3.5 first robin that was labeled restored due to tape in the inside cover regraded it himself as a 2.0 non restored (which is pretty common practice these days for tape in the cover to not count as restoration but bump the grade down instead, I have a couple cgc books like this) then the guy had the tape professionally removed and the book came back a 4.5 non restored. Which all the cgc snobs jumped on as being a red flag even though the employee was quickly terminated. And in the end the grading all kinda of makes sense today anyway back then cgc was borderline calling pressing restoration and now cgc presses books and removes tape too. I see a half dozen cgc mistakes a year on the different comic info sites. I haven’t seen one obviously bad graded book from PGX ever they are a little more generous on their low grades but stingy on the 9.8s
Only gaming cards, what about sports cards ?
He literally uses one of those large rubber happy or sad face stamps you can find at Micheal’s… with super permanent glow in the dark neon pink ink. Perfect for the cheap comic book enthusiasts!
I’ve never ever have been happy with PGX. They also have more issues than what you mentioned. I have owned quite a few and they’ve always been over graded. They also sell for a lot less than CGC books. As long as they’re hiring more people I don’t care.
Anyway picked this up this morning. $57.50 including Priority shipping.
It’s all a wash when you’re paying percentages to grade high price books up front vs paying $20 to grade the same book and take close to the same loss or even less at the sale for it not being CGC as it costs to pay CGC.
If it cost you $500 to grade a book at cgc I can get the same book graded for $20 take $300 less than you and still make more profit.
If the intent is to sell for profit you likely alienate yourself from 95% of potential buyers. That’s my guess as you are the first person I’ve come across that knows comics and the grading process and actually keeps going back to PGX. You are a rarity.
I would also say on average PGX books sell for 20-50% less than cbcs or cgc counterparts, depending on how scarce or hot the books is. So you say you’ll make a profit just because You only pay $20 grading…but I believe the cost of grading with cgc or CBCS does pay for itself in profits for sale…or you will be hanging onto the book for a lot longer before you get a price you actually would make more profit from. And time is money and Lost opportunities to gain more with that money.
Then there’s the point of view of the buyer, who if they’ve been around forums and such will hear many a tale about how somekne bought a PGX key book and sent it in to Cgc/cbcs and it came back with an incomplete, restored or a significant grade reduction. Which is why so
many avoid PGX really…trust. You don’t really know what you’re getting.
If I had a book I know (Or suspected) was restored I’d take my chances with PGX…worst case is I’m out $20 if it comes back restored.
You pay more at CGC because someone has to pay for the oil in your newton rings
Seriously CGC ruins 2 years of everyone’s submitted books with newton rings far WORSE than anything CBCS and PGX have EVER done combined and you all still use them. If Nintendo made games that didn’t work for 2 whole years there wouldn’t be a company called Nintendo anymore.
I’m sending my first submission to CGC this week all Magazines because I can’t get them graded elsewhere. I’m hoping for a 9.8 on my 1st Tankgirl
Newton rings don’t ruin books. The phenom of the inner well touching the case creates a visual effect that makes them less aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Does it impact grade, or the preservation of the book.
But yes, they’re annoying.
So I was looking at my 9.8 EOSV. #2 for if it’s really dark black or whatever the cool kids are saying now. Mines the opposite the black is so light it’s almost yellow can’t find one that looks as lite so guess it’s a grail lol
Let me know how your magazine submissions go. I’m probably going to send some of my video game magazines in soon…Maybe my first Man-Thing as well.
As I have never submitted to CGC before, is it safe to submit through mail? Do I ask them to press?
I want to start with my Eternals collection. I have the 1976 The Eternals series in NM. Picked them up back in 90’ or 91’ for like $1 each.
Personally I’ve submitted plenty of books with no issues. They have a detailed explanation of how to label and package the books. While filling the submission paperwork you can choose options like pressing etc. Its a crap shoot on grades but if you look at the guidelines and graded books similiar to your own you should know the ballpark grade. Grades aside its really nice to get your books protected indefinitely. If you’re looking at selling afterwards it used to be that CGC seemed to have higher listing prices.
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback.
