I like what you got! (Goodwills, Thrift Stores, Yard Sales, ETC Finds)

I swear the HPB by me sought out a comic specialist this past year…nothing can no longer be had for cheap and all keys (Major and Minor) are overpriced…

Yep i visited a HPB this past year when i was in California and they had a sign that the comic books will be priced at market price. Most of the books had no price on them.

@Snizzlepop There are 3 near me and one of them did the same thing. Even minor keys are at premium prices so I don’t even bother anymore with that one.

@davidbitterbaum I’ve been pretty fortunate over the last number of years at HPB. A lot of times there’s nothing but drek but I’ve gotten 4 Thanos 13s, ASM 300, plus a good bit of other great finds there at minimal prices.

Smaller con trip today. Everything I got was either $1 or $2. Mostly run fillers, but a few tiny keys. But, the highlight was chatting with Dan Jurgens and getting a couple sigs. Super nice guy.

Just bought a collection sight unseen. Biggest one yet for me. 500+ books. All look to be bagged and boarded and in good shape from what I can tell. What’s in it? Who the @#$^% knows, but the price made it worth the gamble. From what I can see, looks to be mostly late 90s and early 2000s. I keep hoping to find an Ultimate Fallout 4 in these.

I’ll update this weekend…

Buying a bulk lot blind for a good deal is always fun. I like getting a bunch for cheap and digging in it. Sometimes it’s amazing sometimes it is mostly junk. If you can at least make your money back selling books for a buck each at a show from the lot you did okay, I always argue tho.

Picked up all of these for .50 cents.

Good stuff. Cavewoman issues for .50 is crazy. I sell the crap out of her books.

I also appreciate the humorous cheesecake of Cavewoman comics.

I got these for 2.99 each.

The rest were for. 50 cents each.

I’ve got a question for you all. When you are digging through boxes what type of person are you? Can you just fly through a longbox in a couple minutes because you know your s*#t or does it take you forever because you have your phone out looking up everything in the box?

For the most part I know what books are good from what runs. But sometimes I will pull out the phone. Got burned on a $5 book this week because I didn’t check. But pulled several $45-$50 books out of the $5 bin along with the $2 stinker.

I feel fairly confident in my ability to find the gems without looking, but it really is an ongoing process in terms of studying/learning. It’s such a huge hobby. I’ll come across a run of books & make a mental note to study up on it later. It’s easy to disregard/discount a genre/series & you can really short change yourself.

I think it is really prudent to put in the time/effort of learning as often you are in a position to which you don’t have time to look up stuff as others are also digging right beside you. Time is $$$.

Great finds by the way. I actually grabbed a few of those bronze horror books you snagged myself this weekend…I paid quite a bit more than $2.99.

I check my phone sometimes but only if I’m the only one looking so I don’t slow anyone else down. One time there was a guy he was looking while on his phone, but he was talking to someone giving them play by play of every comic he was looking at.

Yes. I might miss some things, but I tend to know when to stop and look something up, but quickly move on.

If it is stuff I know, I can go really quick. Early bronze age or older I have to go slow as I don’t know it as well as modern-era goodies. The older the comics the more time I need to do a reliable job looking at stuff.

Along the lines of this conversation…what I can find very problematic when it comes to digging is not so much the actual book, but the condition of the book.
A good bag/board or mylite can really, really hide flaws. When I’m digging in cheap books I don’t take the time to remove books, really check condition. Now certainly, on $1 or $2 bins it is sort of moot point.

But these days, $5 $10 bins are more prevalent and those are the books where you may feel like you are really getting a great deal, but when you get the book home, it could have some real issues inside/back cover, tears you couldn’t make out, etc.

Your whole post @Devildog has been my experience actually. Kinds soured me on hunting. But alas for me. Spider-Man is better low grade than no grade.
