I like what you got! (Goodwills, Thrift Stores, Yard Sales, ETC Finds)

I was going to take a ride up to that sale, but totally forgot about it. Glad to see you picked up some good books. When I am searching through the box I will slow flip the first 50-100, but if it looks like it been picked or is stuff cheap stuff I will do the quick flip.

In a gigantic place like that, full of thousands of Moderns (not my expertise), id be going through them quickly as well. Going through each book and searching for recognition. Kinda like a memory game. Other comic bros going through before me plays a factor with speed as well

If Bronze, Copper my knowledge base is far more significant and would go slower checking for condition, since condition these days is really important than ever for value. People turn their noses up on mid grade copper and bronze commons if priced over a dollar or 2

I tend to go a bit slower & will usually check every book unless it’s clear it a big, unseparated chunk of books like Valliant, fodder, etc.

The thing is (and I’m sure many of you feel the same), I take it as a challenge & pride myself on the fact I believe my digging skills are far superior to many. Doesn’t mean I won’t miss something still. Always keep learning!

This hobby is insane with the amount of things you can look for & in in situations like this you need to calculate fast.

.30 cent price variants, .35 cent price variants, DCU variants, later printings, variants, spec, big artists on junk books, low print books, final issues…whew. It’s mentally exhausting at big events.

Skipping around in most cases just makes me fearful I missed a gem…and I’m mad as hell at myself if I see something pulled that I missed.

I find myself repeating “only takes one…only takes one” as I can always find something.

Great haul…would have been fun.

Oh…I also finding myself always pulling books that are unique, odd, that have sexy stuff, or that I don’t feel I’ve ever seen. Often I will get burned, but they usually are ok (or anything horror & mature).

I also don’t mess around with my phone or looking at lists, eBay. For those cheap prices, I grab it and go if it sparks the “hmm…I think this book is a good one”.

I’m a slow and steady kind of guy, flipping through the books one by one looking for things that other diggers miss like high grade newsstands, Canadian price variants. Unless it’s a stack of 90s Youngbloods, X-force etc I skip those.

It’s amazing how many times I’ve found gems in boxes that has been picked through by diggers that use their phones and the key collector app. That app is not a good resource because it’s not really thorough and miss books that are quite valuable.

I love when shops use KCC though. They miss so miss so much stuff.

You can tell when a vendor or a shop uses it because something that’s not worth much is a crazy price and all this good stuff ends up getting missed.

Their instagram said they refilled boxes and added like 60 more long boxes last night. So should be more good stuff today and maybe the coming weekends.

It’s an hour drive for me…so likely won’t be up there again for this sale.

@D-Rog awesome haul man, thanks for sharing! Wish I could have gone to a sale like that but it’s too far a drive.

Cool to hear what everyone’s digging techniques are. I ultimately go with what I know and like, learned from the forum and what seems interesting. A lot a hit and misses.

Still trying to figure out what this book is…how scarce it might be…thinking of just putting it o. eBay for a ridiculous price and leaving offers open. See what happens.

This is what AI had to say…

Boo to AI, yah if it is valuable!

If you wanna know it’s “real value”… do an auction and start if off at like $0.01 and let the people decide how much they’re willing to spend!!!

I don’t agree with that, as if people are not actively looking for it (as it’s so obscure) it may not reach a proper sample size to establish a proper value.

7 day auctions are are too short a window for items that may not appear but once in several years.

If someone has a gocollect account here’s a link.

So then it does apply me thinks, if no one is “seeking” this out, then just throwing out a number based on your “scarcity” is just creating a false demand… If you try and tell people, “you want or need this” type of mentality, comes off as snake oil sales type tactics…

Hopefully what happens is people have alerts set for the book. I hate to say it but at a reserve if you don’t want it to sell cheap.

Need a thumbs down :-1:t5: button.

Haha… that just tells me you know it’s true… haha!!!

My concern is if only one person views it within 7 days of listing it, it sells for $0.01, regardless of what their high bid would be. I would not consider that FMV.

However I would want to give it more time (two or more weeks) to have a better chance two or more people may see it and compete for it…which is more believable as far as determining FMV.

So thumbs down to you, sir!

This is why you set a reserve price to keep it exposed longer, even @Anthony mentioned reserved price…

But it still goes to show… if no one is seeking it out now, that just gives the precedent on it’s current demand. If nobody is looking for it, then it’s not in demand and yet it should sell accordingly…

I’m with D-Rog on this. I’ve seen too many auctions underperform against what multiple BIN listings went for, sometimes badly. And as a buyer, there have been times I just learned something existed and saw one sold a few months ago at a price I would have paid more than.

You can set a reserve, but if you truly have no idea what something’s worth, you could still inadvertently underprice the reserve. It’s fine if the seller doesn’t care about maximum value.
