I like what you got! (Goodwills, Thrift Stores, Yard Sales, ETC Finds)

Hit a bigger fall comic-centric convention yesterday. I was hoping for a Dan Mora pile, but mostly struck out. It’s the same thing that we see often. Lots of dollar books that are mostly run filler junk stuff. A few vendors that have absurd prices on everything. Some then have 75% off or stupid stuff like that.

But, I found a few books. Some Marvel spec I still believe in. Everything was $1, except for the Mora Batgirl. That was $5.

A couple first Ghost Riders for $1. Sure.

I still believe in Wytches. Maybe I just love the story too much. I thought I’d find a pile of cheap of Transformers from this run. One. That’s all I saw out of thousands of books. Junkyard Joe, I tend to buy when they are cheap. You don’t see these at shops much.

A bunch of these came from my main shop who was at the Con. They clearly bought a big collection, because every single book I got from them was sealed up like Fort Knox. I don’t get it. Double boarded and sealed multiple times with packing tape. There was no way in. I had to cut the bags off to rebag them.

Wytches was so good.

Of all the comic vendors at NYCC, only one vendor had a Transformers More than Meets the Eye comic…issue #2B, and it was beat to hell. Several had IDW GI Joe’s, but had them marked $15 and up…

Maybe @bill got to all the good books on Thursday and will show us his amazing haul.

I hit up a few local yard sales/flea markets and picked up these books for a $1 each

Later Issues of Maxx and Pitt normally sell pretty well, the Storm Watch was signed by Jim Lee

I wish I knew what Lady Death to hunt. I see them all the time. Love the Maxx books!

My good luck buys continues this month. I bought a mostly full run of Something is Killing the Children for $60. Only missing 2-3 issues in the teens. Issue #1 is the 4th print, but I’m telling you, every issue looks like a 9.8. Kind of incredible.

Big time yard sale fail this morning.
Last minute posting on Craigslist - comics, LP’s, sports cards, etc… not far from me in a not too populated area in Hudson valley NY

I get their early; they’re not out - no problem I’m there early. I wait.
Start time arrives - now 4 comic guys standing around waiting like me; and 2 following the dude in the house asking to help take out boxes from house after being told multiple times he’s not ready yet. Real pushy dudes.
In the end we all get from yard sale guy “I’m not going to take them out for sale until much later today. I haven’t really looked at them yet”.

So put out a yard sale post for them and wait for 5 hours to put them out? sheesh
0 stars for the seller and 0 stars for the uber pushy comic effers.
It’s cutthroat out there

Fun update on this. I paid $60 for 39 SIKTC issues. Sold issue 4 for $100 and issue 2 for $60. I love a good profitable buy. I’ve got probably another $200 in listed books from this buy, and I’m keeping a bunch to fill in gaps in my collection.

That is the way to do it. Cheap sourcing. Pay off your purchase and make a return on investment. Keep what you need.

Had the day off so decided to check out Half Price Books. Nothing mind blowing, but for $2 each, I’m not mad.

Our local mall has started having monthly hobby, collector, craft shows. I’d say 90% of the vendors are sports card & Pokemon vendors with a splash of other folks. In my experience these can be the best of shows. Folks who don’t regularly set up at cons and sellers whose expertise & focus isn’t on comics, but they come by comics as an aside.
A show just before the holiday also had sellers eager to make $$$.
Got the Malibu/Spawn issue for only $100. Paid a total of $50 for everything else.
I mentioned I haven’t been buying as much but these are the types of books I love.
The Amazing Heroes and Caliber Presents both have early “The Crow” stories & art.
Who doesn’t love them some Grape Ape, Scooby, & Fat Albert!!!
I will continue buying any romance comics I find… especially in nice condition.

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey!!!

So nice not to see the standard all Marvel, DC, or any other recent Modern commodities; particularly in pic #2. Love love gold key, dells, etc

Incidentally, those Scooby Doo’s with issues in teens and 20s can and do sell in upwards of over $100 if in real nice condition.

I purchased a whole bunch at a yard sale for $1 in a plastic tub of gold keys and charltons; while the other comic.savages ravaged the plastic tubs full of common Marvel & DC bronze and copper. I was all by my lonsesome self in the gold key/charlton tub

Ive done extremely well with those scooby doos in the teens/20’s

Went to a little toy show/comic show/fancier-than-a flea market (but still like that) event. Wasn’t much of anything I wanted to buy today, but sometimes you strike it big, and sometimes you just strike out. I did get two fun retro Mr. Potato Head coloring books for the kiddos to enjoy, but that was it. Pic:

So I went to a local show this weekend and bought a lot of cheap books.

The very first vendor I went to had books for $2 each or 10 for $10. Grabbed these ten books for $1 each. Moras, Batgirl, Tim Drake and Transformers #2 and #4. Can’t believe how much these Moras are going for. So successful dig right out of the bat. Moras still available in the wild for $1.

Next found some RWBYs for cover price. Artgerm and Sarah Stone covers ok.

More dollar books. The Marvel Age are 50 cents each and goes for quite a bit graded cgc 9.8s. The books I’ve gotten so far are perfect 9.8 candidates. I’m completely stoked to find the Jim Lee X-Men Savage Rogue newsstand for $1. It goes for real good money in a cgc 9.8 and I’ve been looking for this for a while. I have a lot of the direct versions but for some reason the newsstand copy is really hard to find in my area. The copy here is absolutely flawless, looks like a 10.0. I just might keep it. I’ve been selling the Werewolf by Night 32 facsimile for $15-$20. Every time I list copies they all sell. Gone through about 10+ copies already at 100% sell through rate.

Next I’m trying to find older key books in real high grade looking to press it and decide if I should send it in for grading. Man-Thing #1, Conan #58, and Agents of Atlas were all $5 each. The Doctor Aphra action figure variant was $3 and the Punisher 218 was $15.

The show was great, I could’ve spent all day there as I found the vendors were blowing out comics at very reasonable and cheap prices. I stopped at one vendor that had a ton of early Tomb of Dracula at very high grades selling them for $5-$20. I was eyeing those but decided to familiarise myself with early bronze age books before I start buying them all up.

So this week I picked up a short box and a half of 80s Green Lantern, Flash, Uncanny X-Men (#150s and up) and a random assortment of comics. I got them off a dealer at their storage facility and was selling them for about $1. I grabbed them because I couldn’t believe how high grade the 80s comics were. It was most likely extra store back stock that were never sold and had stayed in storage for decades. I didn’t pick or chose, just grabbed all the high grade copies and threw them in a box and will sort them out later. There were multiple copies of each, some 10+ copies of same issue. Also in there were Batman Adventures books (no #12 obviously but all the rest). I grabbed the nicest looking ones. Also lots of FCBD stuff that were thrown in for free. I grabbed the Avatar ones and Avatar the last Airbender etc. I paid $247 for the 2 boxes and I’m guessing there’s 200-250+ books in there.

Still more to look through but I recognise Green Lantern #148 first Ch’p (2 copies), Gotham Academy 1, early Frissons, also Instant Piano which is either the first appearance of Eltingville Club or a very early appearance. Was a big book at one point but has come down in price.

Not a bad week. Fun going through some fun 80s comics.

I put up some of the Dan Mora books from the post above and got 2 offers for Tim Drake 3 and 4. I checked the offers and see that it’s a repeat customer. It’s our good pal “My Friend”. He’s back!
