People donate stuff to thrift stores/Goodwill/Half Price Books/etc. without realizing what they have quite often. Sometimes the stores don’t realize either, and someone wise to value swoops in and gets the antique/comic/collectible for a stellar price. It isn’t super common, but wild scores can happen.
I just wish they had #3. I have a complete set but it’s in the PC.
Hit a local show here in the MPLS area. Found a few things I was looking for, and a few surprises. Love those Doctor Strange vs Dracula books. Children’s Crusade 1 2nd print was a surprise find for $2. Same price for Captain Marvel 1 and first Amanda Waller (Legends). Happy to find a clean Man-Thing 1 for $12. The Moon Knight is just the worst cover, but I needed that for my run.
A Gist and a ghost cover, see what I did there?
The Haunted Mansion Marvel books have been seeing some increase from the movie trailer (not as much as the other series though, but still). So not a bad grab at all
Those stores that focus on games but also sometimes carry comic books usually have the absolute best stuff! People who are into comics don’t go and pick them dry and the people who run them usually don’t know (or care) if they have absolute gold and will price stuff really reasonably.
Went to a small local show today and did really well! Not even gonna say how I got these because no one would believe me…
Edit: story below
We have all done “things” for a good deal, no judgment.
Well now that you say we would not believe you I am quite curious what the story is!
Hey, I won’t ask but if you want to share pictures I won’t say no… Anyway, that Adventure is a very overlooked book!
I guess it’s more believable than I made it sound, I’m just really excited that the seller accepted the trade. I traded away an Omega Men 3 9.8, Green Lantern 182 9.6 and a Hulk 256 9.6 for the house of secrets and the batman. A few mins later that vendor actually came looking for me to tell me someone else was looking for a Hulk 256, but he was keeping his for the PC, so I sold that other gentleman the Hulk 256 9.4 and used some of that to pay for the other books. Ended up going home with better books and extra cash. Sounds almost unbelievable to me but maybe it’s just my excitement because I know what my total cost was. Also, that vendor was beyond awesome and I will def. be looking for him at other shows to give him more business.
Bribery? Theft? A good knee capping? Black mail? Come on, I gotta know!
I posted the story above your comment. Didn’t mean to make it sound so mysterious lol, just good old fashioned bartering
Ummm…
Hey, some folks have very photogenic feet!
Went to Elephants Trunk Flea Market (Western Ct.) today & 2 other Flea Markets.
Opening day for the season for all of them.
I seriously struck out. I purchased a Betty & Me innuendo cover for a couple dollars and a few other books for a buck, but I gotta say - everyone seems to know exactly what they have within the last couple years.
I’ve been going to Flea Markets for 15 years and the hits (steals?) I’ve made over the years are epic.
But these days, yea, you can still work with people for deals. But those nice nice books laying in the corner are either known what they have or someone scooped them up at 5 a.m. already. I was an early bird at 6 a.m. for the opening days
I’m still going to try this year with yard sales, fleas and such, but “hit” percentages are down to the single digits since 21/22
I haven’t had much in the way of big shocking scores for a bit. Good deals? Yes, for sure. Absolutely earth-shattering finds? Few and far between.
Fun little garage sale find. $1 a book. The Realm #1 was actually triple signed inside.
This was a fun dig also because there was a guy there that was sort of the pushy type, already digging, and we did the ole “oh… I’ve already been through those…nothing good”.
Thrilling Science is a Michael Kulata cover… he’s one of my faves. Of course you can’t pass by a Dave Stevens cover.
Heh…so much for nothing there and I liked watching him glance over as I pulled stuff.
Makes the time and energy I spend paying attention to different books and artists worth it.
I hate when someone is like, “There was nothing good,” as if they know what I’m into/after. It is like if you’re at a casino and go towards a machine someone is getting up from and they’re like, “I cleaned it out,” or something. Then I when a bit anyways, so they’re just silly.
I picked up a stack of old comics in decent-to-rough shape today. Swung by the house of the older lady and her husband while I was stopping at comic shops for FCBD. It was a stack of stuff her first husband had which had been sitting in a drawer and she’d been cleaning stuff out. From the pictures I saw I thought $50 was fair and she was good with that. There is nothing utterly insane but there is some fun non-key stuff. An old Werewolf by Night, an earlier Batgirl appearance (not super-early, but snazzy). The cooler stuff is quite rough, but I find it neat. I’ll keep some and sell some other stuff.
