Definitely nothing to do with this guy and his sword. It’s not like Donny Cates worked at a comic/gaming store and would have to stare at a 7ft cardboard cut out of this guy everyday.
That’s my shop, never seen that guy or a poster of him ever in that shop. 
I thought I heard that Cates had been doing Venom fan-fic since he was a little boy and Knull was part of that work. I think he was part of his early concepts on the origin of symbiotes. I thimk Aaron’s story with the black and gold soldiers was simply a open door for him to expand the Knull mythos. Not all too dissimilar from what the Obi-Wan Kenobi show did with Vader and “I feel a presence I haven’t felt since…”
I thimk it is was a Syfy Wire interview where he details his beginnings of his Venom run.

I think they might of made the first in GOT so Sony wouldn’t own the rights to the character for films or shows.
But this isn’t really a retcon though if you ask me. Since he told his origin by depicting his first in GOT. It would only be a retcon if they changed his origin in a future story I would imagine. Donny told the story with the flashback out of GOT, he didn’t retcon Knull’s origin or story, he just expanded on an existing story that the original author didn’t go into details himself of the characters.
I don’t think Marvel could successfully argue that an extremely vague appearance in Thor consitutes Knull not being a Spider-Man/Venom character. I mean, he is the GOD OF THE SYMBIOTES for crissakes.
Oh yeah they could depending on the original contract. Marvel has its characters across all titles, so adding a new major villain to a Non Spider-Man title would be the very tactic Marvel/Disney would do as a nice F you Sony, you don’t own this character for your movies… type of move!
I honestly think Aaron had no real intention or idea of creating or introducing Knull and just had a random character and then Cates liked the idea and retconned that character to just be Knull and maybe talked with Aaron about it . I mean Aaron hasn’t even touched or done anything with Knull so it makes me think it was just Cates idea
There is no way Marvel could do a stand alone Knull movie without ties to Venom. It would not make sense.
Yeah, it’s more like a F U Sony I think if they own the rights to Knull. A way for them to strong hold them into giving them back the rights.

There is supposedly a deleted scene from the second Venom flick referring to a symbiote God.
Sort of like making a venom movie without Spider-Man.
The rights to Knull have never been revealed, but I’m pretty sure saying Knull appeared in Thor God Of Thunder first was on purpose by Disney to not give away the rights. Hence why no Knull Easter eggs in Venom.
