My shop was showing me the boxes and talking about damages.
Yes, the shipping is just bad and the boxes are horrible, but outside of all of that, it’s just that the SIZE of the boxes are smaller, hold less, easy to handle and thereby are much more prone to being tossed around/crushed by stacking, etc. Even completely full, the penguin boxes are fairly light. They are like little comic book kickballs.
Yeah you are right about this 100%…people don’t ever say 'when I grow up I want to lash rods on a container vessel for 12 hours at a time"…but then they figure out those guys get paid $150,000 a year with $25,000 bonuses paid right before Christmas… makes people think twice later on
Edit: I forgot about the FREE health care thats better than anything in this country, possibly the world, and every hour worked, money is deposited into your 401k OUTSIDE of the money that you already are making.
Oh, I’m not one of those people wanting that job either…I just know a lot of people who make very good livings, and have true freedom…they do not have to work if they do not want to. If they spend their money correctly, they end up with a small fortune working less than half the year.
I’m on that path hopefully. Once kids are off to college, I’m hoping a few years later I can get by with working 5-10 hours a week at most with lots of traveling involved.
My cousin was one of those worker types. Worked his tail off on an Oil Rig for years. Made a boat load of cash. Was able to retire/quit working at age 45. Died of lung cancer not long after. Maybe the oil rig caused the cancer…maybe it didn’t…we’ll never know I suppose.
Yeah, my plan is to semi-retire. Keep working remote contract computer jobs while traveling around. Live very minimally while saving up a boatload more to then hopefully find my piece of land to build a smallish home on to live out my days then die… but hopefully for much much longer.
I would have no doubts if the cancer was caused by his line of work. Nothing worse than working your ass off for years to amass a mini fortune then die before you can even enjoy it. Happened to my dad, worked and worked and worked his whole life… always talked of building log cabin in the woods… died at 60, didn’t even spend a dime of all those hours worked in what he was saving up to do.
Yep, that’s the flipside…working in a hazardous environment can end your life early. My dad had the same deal…military working around aircraft for years in the maintenance department as a low ranking officer, and then made his way out all the way to a Lt. Colonel…but the damage had been done early on. 47 and died of cancer as well. I try to play the middle…don’t save too much to where we don’t enjoy ourselves, but don’t spend so much that we are in poverty…and have really good life insurance I’m covered on all fronts!
Whats even more awesome, is when I go to put in the claim it tells me to call a Customer Service Agent…so not only is it a pain in the ass to go through all these freaking books and pick out all the ones that got banged up, I now have to sit on hold until someone can talk to me about them. Leaders of the industry huh…man…Diamond looking good right now.
Edit: It won’t even let me save the claim to submit later, I can’t even fill it out if I wanted to.
Did a little trial and error, looks like anything over 15 damages is now getting flagged to call a CSR. So much fun…this is making the side hobby not so much fun anymore.
My lcs is always 3 days behind posting their new releases now. The penguin shipments have been absolutely terrible. Guess a modern 9.8 being common will be a thing of the past before too long
