Yup… lots of types of classes when it comes to comics:
- Readers
- Collectors
- Speculators/Investors
- Flippers
The pure readers only care about reading comics. This is the type that don’t care about value, the value they get from it is just reading them.
Collectors are exactly that, people who collect. They might care about overall value of their books but aren’t likely in it to sell or sell under different circumstances, hard times, retirement, etc.
Speculators/Investors I lumped together. These are the types who speculate long term on comics. They want to buy books in hopes they get a nice turn around either a week later or 2 decades later. They sell when they think the value has peaked and they make profit from their initial investment.
Flippers are people who walk into a shop or buy online and intend to flip the minute they can at quick profit, whether it’s a dollar or hundreds, doesn’t matter, it’s all about the quickest return for their money.
Now, one can be a mixture of any or all of these.
Like, we’ll use Anthony as a good example cause I think he pretty much falls in line in every category.
He reads comics.
He collects comics by flipping other comics to buy the ones he wants to collect and keep.
He also buys books for the long term investment by speculating early on a book.
You’ll probably find a large majority of people who hang out on comic book speculation sites are a mixture of several of these or all.
I have friends who are only readers. I know some who collect (seriously, they buy and don’t read and just tuck it away nicely in the long box)… The there are some who only flip.
I’m sure we could come up with some other categories but I’d say those 4 are the primary ones when it comes to comics.
