Online Comic Store Report Card

Not an online store just a gripe. I live in Raleigh and my LCS is a smaller local shop. I decided to go to a different bigger store (Ultimate Comics) to see if I could grab a copy of CM23. FYI -This store has multiple locations so it isn’t a small operation. I’m the first one in the store and there is only one copy remaining and it’s damaged (labeled VF). I grab it and ask for a better copy to which I’m told “sorry, we were shorted and all are damaged”.

I simply said, I don’t believe you BUT I see you have a store variant of Origins, can I please have Cover A not the variant, I must have not seen it in the store. To which the response was “those got shorted and damaged also, only the 14.99 variant is available. I said “interesting “ and walked out.

Forgive the grammar, I’m in the car pissed and wanted to vent.

For ■■■■■ sake, I’d rather they said “look, times are bad, these books are going to help us stay in business and we need the profit. If you want one this is what we are charging.”

Now I wouldn’t be happy about that, but the same BS lie to your face is ridiculous.

That’s when you respond with… “Well, you run a business that’s not a necessity to living. You should be lucky that there are still people out here willing to even buy the cover priced books to keep you in business as most of us are living in these “hard times” as well… you’re not the only person or business struggling”

I like to visit ultimate in Carry only cause the wife and I like to eat at the asian market. My shop of choice when im visiting NC is The Foundations edge (or whatever the name was). Nice small hole in the wall shop with far to many long boxes to look theough. Last time i visited he had like 3/4 boxes of spawn. I wish i could have gone theough them. Nice guy as well.

I’ve got an order for the Last Ronin 1:10 cover with Playsanity Comics. No tracking notice, No updates or anything…wondering if they’re goin to give me the “oh we got shorted copies” story…either way they’re holding my money and not communicating, little concerned I won’t get my book.

Never heard of Playsanity. they any good besides this current concern?

Here is the thing. I can ship a single comic in a Gemini secured inside for 8 oz. packages at 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 are all the same price. So they are not saving any money by shipping that way. I can ship 2 regular comics at 12 ounces and 3 for under 16 ounces. All in a Gemini. All for around $5 or less.

Do you add any reinforcement inside? I don’t care for the space inside unless wedging the comic between boards…brings the weight up to 10-12 oz.

Never have, I always stretch the inner flaps down and have had 0 problems, aso taping the comic down inside it really helps

Didn’t know where else to put this but just noticed that Midtown increased it’s order minimum for free shipping from $75 to $89.

Yea they sent me a 25% off coupon and I noticed that when I was putting stuff in my cart. Didn’t commit to buying anything yet though

Midtown is pricing itself out of the game

All signs as of lately tell me they’re hurting for cash…

Drop UCS as distributor. A week prior to that news they started blasting out “On Sale” email marketing… now they’re raising their minimum amount for shipping…

They’re cutting costs and need to make up probably for lost revenue/profit margins.

Bought a, “The Last Ronin,” #1 from Fantom comics when they had some in stock for just cover price while it was already trending for more. I picked the cheap shipping and it arrived today. Was packed well, wedged in a thick cardboard mailer with extra boards that kept it secure. Comic was in stellar condition. I am pleased and will use them again.

Ditto for me from Fantom.

My experience with Black Cape Comics is that they do NOT have the “best customer service”. I placed an order for (5) Capt Marvel 23 Dauterman variants. The website said they were in stock, no limit. This was my first order with them. Knowing it was going to be a hot book, I decided to NOT use my $5 welcome coupon. I felt this was a kind gesture as they were allowing me to order a quantity. Today, they canceled all but one book and said it was due to an inventory counting mistake. They were giving priority to their existing customers. I was upset, but whatever… I asked that they just reduce my shipping from Priority to First Class and apply my coupon to the order. They said no. The coupon could no longer be used. Really?!? This was their mistake, and they’re not doing this one little request to satisfy a new customer? That is not good customer service in my book. I canceled the order. Not happy, and will not buy there again.

Tfaw and Unknown deliveries just now…

Same thing happened to me with Black Cape Comics and Captain Marvel 23 Dauterman.
I ordered a couple of cover Bs. I also used a reward coupon (from my past purchases) on the transaction. The next morning I received a paypal refund notification for the Cover B refund. The odd thing was I was only refunded A PARTIAL AMOUNT OF THE COVER PRICE.
I’m assuming they figured it’s because they are trying to sell the copies I am to receive at a premium above cover.
So I’m out the Cover Bs I ordered, not been refunded the full price I paid, and lost my coupon reward.
I’m not even going to contact them. I just want the copies I ordered and then I’m never shopping with them again.
Black Cape Comics just screwed the pooch. I was actually using the transaction as a test to determine if I should shift my business to them. Welp, this answers that.

tl;dr Black Cape Comics lost my future business

Same thing here with Black Cape, I ordered 5 of cover A that morning at cover price, got an email later saying they were only sending 1 so now I’m paying $5.00 in shipping for 1 copy.

Instead of some crap shop like Black Cape, why dont know guys order from reputable ones like TFAW, Westfield, Midtown, etc ?
