And today my kids started 2 weeks of remote learning because several people tested positive this past week in their elementary school, basically causing half the school to be quanta tines, they had just gone back to 4 days in school too and could count total cases for the year on one handā¦i guess some think the pandemic is over and let their guard downā¦hadnāt had to go full remote all year until now.

My 9yr old is the same. Plus, throw in the fact their math is nothing like what I learned in the 80s/90s. I have to Google most of the stuff just so I can figure out what in the world is what.

Ha I helped my son with fractions and he got them wrong. He is in fifth grade and I used to teach 5th and 6th grade math, mind you. He had to do it the way they showed him and it just got all messed up. Had we did it the straight math way not the new math way he would have gotten the answers correct. So I showed him how to do it my way and then work backwards to show the answer the way they wanted and he got them all right.

Iām very curious to know how fractions are taught in schools. Can you cite an example of this new way of teaching fractions, Tony? Maybe PM?
I can give you a quick example. They have to use bars and break the bars down into smaller pieces. I always used legos to teach fractions as I love manipulatives. But like dividing a fraction they have to create a bar and then further divide the bar down into pieces. so 1/2 divided by 1/3
you create the bar and divide it in half, then color the half, than break down the half into pieces and color the one piece a separate color. so I went through all this with my son and his answer did not count for the other part not being broken down into pieces. So he had 1 1 break the one piece down 111 1 and ended up with 1/4 as an answer, which is wrong. I always just showed the kids when dividing fractions to multiply the denominator when the numerators are 1.
Numerator is latin for ānumber eighterā so you always put an 8 on top.

The math methods they teach today are dumb. I have heard this story many times from friends and family.
The way they do it now is so confusing and annoying, and this is from someone who aced all his maths up to the college level.
