You could be right. My shops do order a sufficient quantity, and a large no. sit on the shelves for months. The initial SW issues did sell out, but then for the later issues it is about the spec. I’m not saying this is the norm; this is what I’ve experienced around me. I hope the spec pans out for all in it, though. I guess this is part of the spec game. I just have to be careful (low risk) with my specs, as I just about break even with the purchases I actually collect; I am not at the point that I can quit my day job.
This is probably true, and shipping costs may make the cost prohibitive.
We are talking about a #1….and with spec….
Collect how you want of course. But the chances of a #1 lower printed IDW book with spec potential hitting a $1 bin in this crazy SW market is very low. Especially when we are pre FOC and can lock it in for $3, it’s probably the smarter move. But obviously collect how you want. Cheers!
No disagreement ! You have to do what you feel is best for you. My comments were based on my habits. I am not advising anyone to do what I do. Was just explaining my logic. For sure, I do wonder if I am making a good decision or not. Been wrong many times. For newer books, I feel the #1s have a larger print, more orders and more eyes; its the later issues that have a lower print, and orders cool off; so maybe more rare (?). So I spec more on rarity, and my budget … Its good to hear how other folks approach buying their new books though, always open to new ideas to refine my habits.
The heat has faded some from the High Republic, and this is part of the IDW line. I get that the early issues of this line were heavily ordered, but with no incentive this book could be a good book to pick up a few of. Most shops will not order heavy on this.
I agree, and I definitely could be wrong. I guess its going to depend on the story, and the characters. if they catch on, my spec would be a bust and I will be looking at these postings kicking myself for only buying one copy. Still not the spec guru I want to be, hence my low-risk gambles.
You are missing what I’m trying to say.
This isn’t just a SW #1. It’s an IDW kids mini series. They aren’t ordered heavy.
The last IDW Star Wars Adventures Mini-series was in May. That #1 issue is 153rd for the month. Behind 9 other Star Wars titles including several series in the teens in issue #.
The IDW series, especially the minis, have a lower print run.
Granted this one will probably sell more copies then the one in May, it likely won’t crack the top 50 or even the top 5 in Star Wars titles for the month.
I get what you are saying. We can compare notes when the book comes out. Again not trying to come off as an authority on the book, or spec, just my way of approaching this book. Wish I had an almanac like in ‘Back to the Future’.
I think it depends on what kind of upside is involved. I think the Monster of Temple Peak might be a $15-20 book at best, given that everyone can see if coming from a mile away. Some might jump on that in volume if that is their thing.
I agree ! I feel like I have sidetracked this discussion into a ‘should you spec or not’ discussion. I apologize but I was just explaining my spec routine with respect to this SW book out loud - I really hope the spec pans out ! Again - not a spec authority I bow to the wisdom of others but I have to do me.
I like Star Wars. I like monster hunters. I like only one cover. I buy 5 and hope the story doesn’t suck. Maybe in 5 or 6 months she’ll be in the main series.
What’s the deal with this? I’m in the UK; and the shop I moonlight at says they can’t get them, but Forbidden Planet and a certain eBay seller always stock them. Is it a licensing issue overseas, or is there an additional cost to supply them abroad? We have no issues with other IDW Star Wars books, just the HRA titles.
I believe it is a licencing issue with IDW Star Wars titles. My LCS cannot order them. A few of the UK store variant sellers sometimes stock them (Like with High Republic Adventures 1) as well as the stores you mentioned. But I could only find this one for sale at FP in the UK, nowhere else seems to have a copy for sale.
Any spec on High Republic #8?
When did Key add this to their list? Cause we were talking about this issue way back on May 18th…
It’s in the solicit. So I’m sure pretty early. Not really a CHU scoop if it’s in the solicit.
True but they don’t list books immediately. Drunkwooky was chatting up firsts real early on…
I guess my point is, why link to Key when you can link to the same post we’re all commenting in?
