Strange Academy 1

Totally agree. Will be interesting to see where the Opena ends up 5 years from now.

This book was the first book I bought 25 copies of. I have 4 going to cgc including the 1 in 25 but don’t know if I should send in more due to small rubs and dings. I am just getting into grading books and would appreciate input. btw This site is amazing! Thanks

This book is known for color rub. I would only send in ones where you feel there are no defects on it as all. I would also get them pressed before sending them in!

Rubs are definitely problematic if you want 9.8s. Dings might be different - just depends if they break colour or not. If the dings are minor and easily fixed with a simple press, then send them to CGC and ask for a pre-grading press. If more substantial, but not colour-breaking, send first to a specialist presser who will take the time and effort necessary to put it right.

Of course, if the book takes off like UF4 at some time in the future (big if I know) then 9.6s and 9.4s will deliver a great profit, but don’t bank on that quite yet!

Who has read this series? Is it any good? Are the characters any good? Who are the characters? I haven’t heard much about the actual story or characters, and I have not read it myself.

I really, really enjoy it. The characters are slowly growing and have distinct, fun personalities and histories. Some are essentially unknown, others have ties to existing characters (Dormammu’s son for example), the daughter of Frost Giants, two Asgardian children, Dessy a demon from limbo, etc. Very cool concepts for each of them.

I really love the use of sort of B, C, D list characters as instructors as well. We get to see Agatha Harkness, Son of Satan, Magik, Doctor Voodoo, as instructors.

The interactions of these students…all with their own special powers is fun to watch as there are the typical rivalries, friendships, hostilities of youth in a school type setting.

The story has typical sub plots, but there appears to be some sort of over-reaching mystery/problem involved that deals with the use of magic. We don’t know quite yet.

The main, new character “Emily Bright” seems to be at the forefront of things (but she isn’t really overshadowing the others)…sort of like Harry Potter as the main character but his pals were important as well.

It’s just a really fun book IMO…it hasn’t slowed down, and I really look forward to it.

I’m glad you are enjoying it, @Devildog. Who would you say is your favourite character, and why?

@jcLu So far, I actually really like Doyle. All of the character’s are intriguing, and a couple we really haven’t learned enough yet to be fully invested so I’ll wait on judgement relative to them.

I like Doyle because I think it’s interesting that while his father is the prototypical “bad guy”, Doyle isn’t necessarily following in his footsteps. Doyle is a hothead for sure “no pun intended”, but can he get that under control? He’s also an illegitimate son so the whole “who is his mom” comes into play. He’s already had a fairly significant role in the plot line, but has faced some challenges.
The whole dichotomy of a character being good or evil and what makes them choose a path is in play.

Sure it’s a tried and true story/plot and such…but it works.

He also just looks really cool.

That’s another thing about this series. I feel like a ton of love and though went into it. Very distinct looks, abilities, etc. I personally love the art and flow.

If they made action figures of the characters from this series I would buy them all. (which is atypical for me and super hero/comic related toys)

I was introducing my stock investor friend to comic spec last year and took him to my LCS where we found 10 1st print #1s plus variants. I passed on all of them so he could buy. Plus I didn’t think they would surpass the $15-$20 they were going for. Oh well… he returned the favor though by putting me on PLTR at $11 though lol.

Anyone think buying the 4th print is a good move? I can still get them a little over cover basically. I’m contemplating buying a few just to hold. Or will these later prints just not see the appreciation?

If you can get it at cover or about cover it is worth the risk. I picked up a few copies of each print.

For cover definitely doesn’t seem bad, I collected all the prints and especially like the different covers. 5th ptg was nice too with the black and white of the 1st print.

the 1st print cover A and 1:50 will always be king. but the later prints will increase in price. the momoko is the only one i think will go down over time.

I missed the first print because my stores in my area was closed during the pandemic. By the time it reopened it was too late for me to still get the first prints. I picked up a few copies each of the later printings, got a stash of those. My favorite is the 5th printing, it’s the black and white sketch of the 1st printing. Got a bunch of those. They look great, will get them graded and keep them for my PC unless the prices get out of hand.

Yeah, I remember in our area when the 1st prints arrived, the LCS owner only allowed a few regulars to come down one at a time and she locked the door while we were there. It was kinda cool tho, had the whole shop to myself to pick out the comics. I think Venom 25 also came out near that time so picked a stack of Venom and Strange Academy up together. I think it was one of the only launches where I got multiples of every single cover… well until Star Wars High Republic anyway.

yea it was kind of a perfect storm for SA #1 1st print, between covid lockdowns and only 2 store variants. book should have had a much larger print order than just 71k. does comicchron add in store variant number to there order numbers?
