Well, this movie was a nice trailer for Thor 5…
Having now seen it twice…
This feels like a really great 2hr 20m movie that the filmmaker has been forced to cut down to a 2hr run-time by the studio – perhaps because Disney have been told by cinemas that they don’t want any Endgame length movies, so all the recent ones are 2hrs only.
There are a number of moments that are ellipsed for no particular reason (e.g. we don’t specifically see that Gorr has cut himself on the Necrosword when he gets out of the oasis pool, which is either sloppy storytelling, or that shot was deemed disposable).
Thor deliberately transforms his costume into the one with the silly helmet – which feels like the reveal shot of a set-up joke (e.g. “Thor always changes his costume when he feels nervous”) except that we haven’t had that beat, so the joke doesn’t land, and the moment just feels odd.
On Gorr’s planet, we suddenly cut inside some kind of a tent building that the heroes are making their way through – except that the building hasn’t been indicated in any wide exterior shot, which is very odd for this kind of movie – again, a potentially disposable few seconds, because you’re trimming down towards a tight target.
We know from the press junket and other statements that there was a lot of material left on the cutting room floor – including scenes that were teased in the trailer, e.g. Gorr pulling the Necrosword out of the beach.
A little additional run-time – spent rebalancing the movie away from comedy towards drama, and detailing the Gorr and Jane Foster narratives – would have made the ending really pay off, and I think we’d have had a stronger movie for it. Which feels like a shame, frankly, because there’s definitely a really good movie in there somewhere.
I agree… a good movie in there.
But what was presented to the viewers was, at best, “a fun movie”. Nothing more.
BTW - when did the Greek gods get Italian accents? My gosh. I guess that’s part of the “fun”, but really? I found it SMH; not fun
Toothgnasher + Toothgrinder = Awesome
Looks like he forgot to turn that into an AUCTION instead of BIN…
Looks like he re-listed it for $309.
Clearly a listing error. No surprise there.
Spoilers
I thought the movie was great maybe even the best Thor movie. Only bad thing to say about it is the Guardians were not needed and kinda pointless. Was surprised they brought in Singularity I thought I knew the whole movie going in so it was nice to geek out as that Singularity spec is my baby from 6 years ago hope everyone bought the Hans for $5 back then.
Singularity is one of the few characters I’ve written up twice in this one Gorr is in the same article kinda creepy.
Happy to hear she made an appearance. Just listed my Hans 9.8.
great spec, alana, one of your many (one of my few).
have been sitting on three 9.8s since 2016 so im excited for it to finally pay off. had one listed for ages and it just sold but i’ll hold the others for now.
I haven’t heard anything about Singularity being in the movie… was it an end credit scene that wasn’t leaked?
Not an end credit but the end of the movie.
Rotten Tomatoes is nothing more than an arbitrary, subjective rating. It doesn’t mean the movie is good or bad. Top Gun has a rating of 99%, and I heard its a basic action movie with planes and not much of a plot.
MAVERICK is
Pretty much this. I think people were surprised it was decent and gave it a perfect score. Its certainly nothing special.
I think it’s scoring high cause it’s got a wide array of an audience and from when I saw it, there was a bunch of old people like me probably entertained with nostalgia from it all. I liked the movie myself, brought back some great memories not only from first movie but just from the 80s in general around the time the movie came out.
I can’t believe you guys are still talking about Thor when the cinematic masterpiece Minions: Rise of Gru is already playing
I thought it’s turned to Top Gun though…
The Gentleminions are taking over
